Welcome to the Traditional Martial Arts Dictionary.

I originally decided to write this application for my own reference.  I thought it would be useful to have a readily available means to look up Japanese-English translations.  As opposed to a language dictionary, I thought it would be nice to have a reference that highlights martial arts terms.

I compiled these terms throughout my over 30 years of martial arts practice.  These terms and their definitions are based on my own experiences and any errors are strictly my own.

I would like to thank my senseis over the years, in particular my first instructor and the man who gave me my start in the martial arts,  Earll-Sensei in Colorado Springs, as well as Wacker-Sempai.  I’d also like to thank Meguro-Sensei and Kamo-Sensei in Tokyo.

I welcome any feedback, including suggestions for new entries and any errors at info@martialkihon.com.

Thank you,

Mark Davenport

This app is for reference only and is not meant to replace instruction in the martial arts.  Especially with Japanese language, a translation may have many interpretations for any word and this application is based on my own knowledge of these topics.  I do not claim to have the final say in the translation/interpretation of these terms.  If there is a discrepancy between my definitions and your sensei’s explanation, please use your sensei’s definition and think of this app as simply a reference.
